The Avila Valley Advisory Council wholly supports protecting our ocean, coastline and all of their resources. The nominated Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary has potential in providing protection and we applaud that aspect of the Sanctuary. We do, however, have concerns regarding the possible unintended consequences to our local commercial fishing industry, as well as to our local control. We sincerely hope that as the selection process for the Sanctuary moves forward, the concerns voiced by current sanctuaries, and others, will be heard and addressed, so that all stakeholders will truly benefit from the protections the Sanctuary proposes.
